Can I cut on the surface of my wood or butcher block counter?

Yes, you can cut on the surface if you have our mineral oil finish, and if you oil it regularly. If you have our protective finish we recommend using a cutting board. Yes, we make cutting boards.

Can I have an undermount sink?

Yes, our countertops are sealed to protect them against water damage. We offer both under-mount and over-mount cutouts. In fact we offer all sorts of cutouts for sinks, posts, bulkheads etc.

How often will I need to re-oil my oil finish butcher block countertop or butcher block surface?

For natural oil finish butcher blocks, we recommend that you re-oil all surfaces of your block every 3-4 weeks depending on your usage. When butcher block becomes dry and lighter in colour you know it is time to re-oil your block. Wood is a live material and extremes of humidity and dryness can swell and shrink your butcher blocks enough to cause seasonal checks to appear. You can help preserve your butcher block by keeping your home humidified in winter and by refreshing your butcher block every 3-4 weeks with a generous coating of natural butcher block oil on all surfaces.

How do I keep my butcher block sanitized?

Keep your butcher block sanitized by simply wiping down the surface with a clean hot and soapy towel after each use and dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry. If you want to sanitize the block more thoroughly use a diluted mixture of 1-5 ratio water to vinegar.

How do I get rid of any onion or garlic odours?

Use lemon or lime juice with a little salt. Sprinkle butcher block with coarse salt, cut lemon or lime into quarters to rub salt into board. Let sit 2-3 minutes and then wipe butcher block clean with a damp cloth. Use a clean towel to remove any excess water or let the butcher block air dry.

What if my butcher block is stained or discoloured?

Sprinkle coarse salt on your butcher block and then use a damp sponge or paper towel to rub the stain or discolored area. The salt will absorb stains, flavours and odors. For tougher stains try sanding down the area with a fine grit sand paper. Once sanded, seal with butcher block oil.

Should I use the same cutting board for fish and poultry that I use for vegetables?

Although cutting boards do not harbor bacteria, it is a good habit to use a separate cutting board for different food prep. This will ensure protection against cross contamination and prevent the spreading of certain food borne bacteria such as E-coli.

How do I clean my butcher block countertop that has a protective finish?

We recommend a wood cleaner that is non-toxic. Soap and water will work best.

Do you make custom sizes?

Yes, that is exactly what we are known for and what sets us apart from others. There is no extra fee for custom sizes.

Will they warp?

We’ve done vigorous research on this and have developed a way to manufacture butcher blocks with the proper grain orientation so the product holds itself stable. We also seal our tops to insure a warp free countertop. All our tops come either oiled or with a protective sealer, unless you plan to finish the surface yourself. When possible to mount the butcher block to a base, then minimal fasteners are required.

How strong are the glue joins?

The glue that we use is designed specifically for butcher block and cutting board applications. We use type 3 wood glue that is both water resistant and food safe vs. type 2 glue that is just water resistant. It has 4000 pounds per square inch of holding power.

Will Knotty’s mount my kitchen sink to the countertop?

No, we will not install or mount your sink. We do however make the perfect hole to fit your drop-in sink or under-mount sink. We also do not do any plumbing or removal of existing plumbing.

Will I enjoy my new butcher block?

Yes, you definitely will!

Disclaimer: The following is a quick overview of some of the characteristics of the wood and finishes that you can expect from Knotty’s Woodwork. Please read them carefully. We bring these to your attention so that you may know, from start to finish, the type of product you can expect from us.

Wood is a natural resource - therefore, butcher block counters may vary in color, texture, and grain. Wood characteristics naturally occurring (such as variations in colour, grain, mineral streaks, pinholes and knots) are not considered defects. Color variations in butcher blocks are also a natural occurrence due to species, region of growth, age, etc. Wood by nature will undergo expansion and contraction movements as it compensates and adjusts to changes in humidity and temperature. If staining is required the purpose of stain samples is a way to give the client a better idea of the overall look of the final product, but not to show an exact replica of their furniture/countertop. No two trees are alike and any variances will only increase the unique nature of the piece.
